CANON The Hunger Games
CANON POINT after the war, before the epilogue
HISTORY: LINK
PERSONALITY:
Johanna was chosen for a fight to the death with other children at the age of 17. Her plan to get out of it was simple. She used her skills in acting and lying (which is basically the same thing if you look at it a certain way). She kept quiet and feigned weakness during training, showing all the other kids she wasn’t shit. When it came to the actual Games, Johanna hid, biding her time until there were only a few Tributes left. Then she killed them swiftly, with her axe (as her District’s export was lumber). She had what they called “a wicked ability to kill.” Her anger, her skills in deception and axe throwing, and a comfortableness with trees got her the win. After that, she went back home.

Her anger fuels her. She is now an exposed nerve, she is unfiltered, she doesn’t care. She’s angry and vindictive. The world owes her because of these Games. She got chosen by random and now the universe should repay her. She knows for a fact that the arena messed them all up good, and she's embracing her new outlook on life. There’s no going back now, she's forever changed. Or was she like this all along? It's hard to tell. But the Games were just another part of growing up for her. Now that her Games are over, she just has to get on with her life-- maybe just as desperately as she did in the Games.

When the president of Panem told her she would be pimped out to the residents of the Capitol, oh so excited from her thrilling win, Johanna refused. She's stubborn, she wouldn't let herself be used, and they owed HER. Her stubbornness got her family killed. It didn’t extinguish the anger in her. It just made it burn hotter.

When Katniss starts a revolution, the victors of past games are thrown into the ring again. Johanna again felt that the world owed her-- she already went through this shit. She has this idea that things were tit for tat. That things were equal in the universe. They so were not. During this Quarter Quell, Johanna appeared reluctant but willing to give herself to the rebellion. She told her allies in the in her second Games that “They can't hurt me. I'm not like the rest of you. There's no one left I love.” Knowing there’s nothing left for her, Johanna made the perfect rebel. Nothing to lose. Katniss doesn't know if she's "gutsy or crazy." Johanna is a loose cannon. She's gutsy, but also a bit of sad person.

She calls the other members of the rebellion, the ones she has to babysit (as they were older and no longer fighters like they used to be) "Nuts and Volts". She’s mean, someone who teases and gives rude nicknames. She throws around the word 'dummy' and 'stupid' a lot. Johanna is actually pretty funny, if in the right situation.

When it came to Nuts, she shoves the woman down on the ground because the woman was in a state of shock and repeating “tick tock.” Only Finnick is able to calm her down (by picking her up and dunking her in water, hey whatever works).

Johanna gets captured and tortured. The particular way they did it was water paired with electroshocks. After, Johanna develops a fear of water and doesn’t shower. Sponge baths all the way. She doesn’t censor her thoughts, easily talking about her torture. However, she doesn't share her fear of water with anyone. She hides it well, she doesn't want anyone to see. Her fear or her dirty hair and nails. It's the chink in her armor. She doesn't want to show weakness, or any emotion, but she's full of them. It shows at the seams. Johanna is fit to burst. She has so much to give but keeps it locked away.

The torture she endured felt kind of good, in a strange way. She knew that she was protecting people. She didn't give up secrets. Johanna is loyal, once you have her, you really have her forever. She may push people away but she only does it for what she thinks is their own good. No one should have a friend like her. Her friends are the only ones who know what it's like to be in there, and they're the only people she feels she can trust. Everyone else sees her harsh and cold, a killer.

Johanna admitted that she was kind of disgusted by the fact that Katniss was actually a good person and not faking it for the cameras. Good people unnerve her. Everyone always wants something. And Johanna herself wanted something, and that's why she faked it for the cameras. Maybe because she doesn’t think she’s a good person anymore-- one that deserves anything good. That’s what the arena does to a person-- celebrates the horrible things they do-- good people don’t win.

She became addicted to Panem’s version of Morphine and siphoned off Katniss’ supply. This was both a fuck you to the girl who was so genuine she couldn’t stand it and a way to feed her new addiction. Her addiction was beat rather quickly, as she went into training for the war. Katniss helped her when she couldn't go on from withdrawal sickness. She even brought her a bundle of pine needles to help with the homesickness. Johanna said it was the nicest thing anyone's ever done for her.

At the end of the war, the new president asks if they should have another Games, this time with the children of the Capitol’s residents. Johanna, vindictive and seeking revenge, votes yes. Only a few vote with her and they’re beat out by the opposition.

Johanna knows no one likes her-- she’s impatient and honest to the point of cruelty. But with that kind of honesty, she's probably more trustworthy than anyone else. She's the kind of person that can pick you apart. Her only friend in the Capitol scene was Finnick-- a man that put up a front of being a playboy. Johanna saw right through it. She knew what he was being put through-- he still had family and a girlfriend. He was the one who recruited her into being an ally. She wanted something good for Finnick and did it for him. Eventually, she realized it was the only thing left for her to do. Die for her country. Die for the poor kids in her District. Die for Finnick's girlfriend, Annie.

She's an ugly person, but maybe ugly can be beautiful in someone's eyes. Maybe she can make friends. Maybe she's not broken.
